Hang In There! It Gets Easier

The Monday after Day Light Savings Time is hard. Who knew that one little hour could be so important. I struggled to go to sleep last night, and that never happens for me. Usually, I’m in bed before 9:00 p.m. and I drift right off to sleep. Last night, however, I just wasn’t sleepy. My afternoon nap was probably the culprit. So this morning I sit here with my eyes watering, do to the amount of yawning that I’m doing, sipping my coffee, reminding myself that it gets easier. Soon this new time will a habit, and I will be able to go to bed at 9:00 p.m. and get up at 5:00 a.m. with no problem.

In the meantime, I am going to help myself through the process and focus on the good. Negative thoughts never help. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of the benefits. The days are getting longer and we will have more daylight. We will have more time to do things in the evenings before it gets dark. The temperatures will start to increase, the trees and flowers will start to bloom, and Spring is right around the corner.

Any time that anything changes in our lives it is hard at first. It takes time for us to adjust. So we just need to be patient with ourselves and others during the process. We won’t feel this way forever. By next Monday, this will be our new normal.

Here is my best tips for getting through the day when we don’t get enough sleep.

  1. Don’t snooze. It will only make it worse.
  2. Drink some caffeine. But only enough to wake your system up. Too much can have the opposite effect.
  3. Exercise. Getting our heart rate up can wake our body and brain and give us energy.
  4. Eat a healthy breakfast. Giving ourselves a nutritious breakfast will help us have more energy. Avoid sugar though. It can cause us to crash later in the day.
  5. Be nice to yourself and others.

Have a wonderful day!
