What To Do When Motivation Disappears

Have you ever been totally motivated to do something, and then a few days into the change you lose that wonderful motivation? It happens to us all. People ask me all the time how I keep my motivation. The truth is that I don’t stay motivated all the time, but I have created habits to keep me on track.

When we train our body to do a certain tasks, it does it automatically. For example, I get out of bed every morning and brush my teeth immediately. I haven’t missed a day of brushing my teeth in years or decades. Why? Because it is part of my routine. I don’t have to think about it, I just do it.

When I realized that I struggled every day to get my workout in, then I decided to create a habit. Now I get up at 5 a.m. For the first 30 minutes, I drink my coffee and read my Bible. Then, I write this blog. After I’m finished with my blog, I put on my workout clothes and do my workout. It’s non-negotiable. I don’t think about it or allow myself to make excuses. I have a standing appointment with myself every morning, and I keep those appointments.

The first few weeks were so hard. I kept trying to quit. When I finally decided that I would not tolerate sleeping in any longer, and that I was going to exercise every single day, then it got easier. Because I removed my excuses.

Tips for creating a habit:

  1. Do it consistently every day until it becomes part of your routine
  2. Find your motivation. Watch a motivational youtube video, talk to an accountability partner, read a book, pray. Do whatever that helps you to keep moving forward.
  3. Remove your excuses. It’s going to be hard. Especially if you’ve had a bad day or night, but don’t allow your brain to come up with an excuse.
  4. Remind yourself daily, why you want to change. Your reason to change has to be stronger than your desire to stay the same.

Change is tough, but so are you! You can do anything that you set your mind to do! Don’t give up!

Love and blessings,

Candida
