Despite Your Circumstances was probably one of the hardest books for me to write. Before I was qualified to write a book about overcoming hardships, I had to actually go through the hardships and learn to overcome them. So many times throughout the process, I wanted to give up. I got so tired of struggling every day. Yet, there was a part of me that continued to fight—despite my circumstances.
Sometimes I look back at that time of life and wonder how I managed to get through it all. Then I remember that the Lord was in the trenches with me. Even as others, medical professionals and some of my family, encouraged me to give up—to stop writing books and working—my Lord encouraged me every day to keep going. He was always that still small voice of encouragement and the strength that I needed to make it through another hardship.
At the time, when I was very sick, I wondered why my life was so difficult. Why did I have so many hardships to overcome, when I was trying to do His work? In one of the darkest times of my life, when I had to make a decision to keep going or to give up on my hope and my dreams, somehow I knew that God would take it all and use it for His glory. And that’s exactly what happened.
My book, Despite Your Circumstances, was published a few years later and went on to win the 2016 Christian Small Publisher’s Association Book of the Year Award for Christian Living. God didn’t stop there. He also helped me to heal my body with food and exercise. Now He is blessing me to use those experiences to help others with their own health journey.
Regardless of the situation, God can turn our hardships into blessings. If you are currently in the trenches with Him, just remember this hardship won’t last forever. It has a purpose. During the trials, if we open our hearts to the Lord and embrace the struggle, He will teach us and help us to grow.
