Silence used to make me uncomfortable. If I was home alone, I had the TV playing in the back group or music turned up. I never sat in silence and just breathed. Most of the time, I thought I was too busy. Now I have discovered, the busier I become the more that I need the silence.
When I meditate, my stress resolves. It helps my shoulders to relax and the tension to leave my body. Honestly, I thought it was crazy at first. The first few times I tried it, I felt uncomfortable and a little silly. Now a guided meditation that helps me to relax my whole body is one of my favorite things to do. I have an app called power nap. It helps me to relax, fall asleep, and wake up feeling so much better in just 30 minutes. I usually pair this practice with deep breathing. Just a few minutes of deep breathing is so beneficial.
Writing in a gratitude journal is another powerful form of silence. When I record each entry and allow myself to feel the gratitude in my soul, it establishes my mood for the whole day. It’s hard to feel stress or worry, while we are feeling grateful. My goal is to list three things each day, and they can’t be the same as previous days. It truly helps my mind to search for things to be grateful for.
Prayer is my favorite form of silence. I love to talk to God and then be quiet and listen for Him. I love it when He talks to me. So often He reassures me and gives me guidance. Only, however, if I show up and desire His presence.
Lastly, I like to give myself time to think and brainstorm. If we give ourselves a topic and time to reflect, it’s amazing at how our brain can come up with new ideas. The key is to try to just focus on the topic. My mind likes to wander. So I try to keep it focused. When other thoughts enter my mind I acknowledge them, and then tell myself I will think about them later. Lately, I have come up with several new ideas because I gave myself the time and space to think.
